The Philosophy of Blogging

Question. (I state this a lot. Kind of like a WARNING for those who need to know what's coming before they can continue. For people who like to know the future because it makes them feel more in control. I'm one of them.) What is the point of blogging? I have a few thoughts...and remember, I say this with deference, as I have now succcumbed to this trend. Note: I have NOT given in to tweeting. I will never surrender. Never give up. In the words of Dido, there will be no white flags upon my door.

Suggestion 1: Blogging is brave. It's kind of like a public diary. We type faster than we write, and for some reason writing our thoughts, feelings, and ideas on Microsoft Word just feels....wussy. Blogging is for those who don't care what others think. It makes a statement. A public, for the world to read, fist in the air rebellion kind of statement that says "I don't care what the world wants, I will be me, and I will tell you who I am with all my idiosycncracies, craziness, and controlling tendencies, oh hear me roar!" Yeah, blogging is pretty darn bold.

Suggestion 2: Narcissism. Yup. This is pretty honest. It started with facebook status posts. No actually it started with Myspace. Then facebook status. Then blogs. Then tweets. (Thank goodness, I've avoided the tweets...so I'm still a little bit humble). We seem to think that somewhere out there, someone is sitting in the edge of their seats thinking...ya know, I'm just dying to know what so and so is doing, how they are feeling, what is going on in the innermost, most vulnerable parts of their heart...and I know just where to look for that kind of sensitive, revelatory information....facebook. And heck, I'll give it to you, there are some people who do, genuinely care what is going on in the deepest parts of your heart. They're called friends. And they usually use that thing called a phone to do the dirty work of learning how you are doing. They work for it. So to heck with a status post....make your friends work for it. If they are true friends...they will.

Suggestion 3: Maybe you'll get famous. Maybe your blog will be so darn unique, clever, witty, upstanding, and profound that people will be clammering to read it (did I spell that write? or is it clamoring? I wish blogs had spell check...) Maybe there will be so many people reading your blog that they will ask you to write a book, and put all your posts into a book, and it will be published and purchased by thousands...nay, millions of readers. Maybe you'll be fielding calls by Jon Acuff, Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters, Barbara Streisand, David Letterman, and Larry King who want to have an in-depth, up close and personal interview with you to discuss the creative inner-workings of your clever brain of masterminded ingenuity and creativity and irony.

Suggestion 4: Perhaps, if you are lucky, someone in the world...just one person, will identify with the thoughts of your heart and will be impacted, relieved, inspired, because they know that they are not alone. Someone else gets them. Someone else is as crazy as they are. Or misses their boyfriend too. Or is bored or tired or sad or pensive tonight or who likes to cook cupcakes while singing bad 90's pop songs and throwing flour high into the air so that it covers the kitchen in a white, fluffy mist yelling "let it snow! let it snow! let it snow!" Maybe God will use your words to touch the heart of someone else. And if that's all it's good for, then a blog is worth it. At least that's what I think.

So what is my reason for blogging? I think it's a combination of all 4. Yep, I'm a brave, narcissistic, wanna-be recognized and acknowledged for my undiscovered, misunderstood talents and hopefully, maybe, touch a a few hearts along the way.

So here it goes.
